Breast Augmentation is designed to increase the size and/or alter the breast shape through the use of saline or silicone prostheses. This operation may be used as a reconstructive technique following breast cancer, to balance different sized breasts, or to enhance the contours of the body.
The surgery begins with an incision, made in the crease of the breast, under the arm, or the perimeter of the areola. A pocket is created either underneath the breast tissue or under the chest wall muscle. The implant is placed in either location, centered directly behind the nipple. Then the incision is sutured, closed and taped and the breasts wrapped and supported by gauze bandages.
